Great Britain's National Stud was established in 1916 at Tully, County Kildare, Ireland, when Colonel Hall Walker donated his bloodstock to the British government. A number of classic winners have been bred at the National Stud, and some famous stallions have been in residence. In 1963 the stud was moved to 500 acres at Newmarket. The stallions that have graced its paddocks include the brilliant sprinter Tudor Melody, Epsom Derby winner Never Say Die, and the Epsom Derby and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Mill Reef, a champion stallion. -- P.E.
