THE WELKIN (c. 1904 by Flying Fox-Woodbury), at the time of his death at the age of 21 in 1925, was regarded as the most successful sire ever imported from England, despite his fairly average racing record in that country. Bred by the Duke of Westminster, he was purchased by E.E. D. Clarke for his Melton Stud in Australia for 600 guineas. In Australia he was bred primarily to his owner's mares, but managed to get a number of notable horses, including Gloaming, and led the sire's list in Australia three times. His gravestone reads: "A Sire of Many Winners."
