Graveyard Steles at Kia-Ora Stud |
Kia-Ora Stud was established in 1914 by businessman Percy Miller on land east of Scone that had been purchased from the earlier, noted Segenhoe Stud. The English-bred MAGPIE (1914, by Dark Ronald), a winner of the Rous Memorial Stakes in England and second in the Two Thousand Guineas, imported to Australia, won the SAJC Elder STakes, the VATC CAulfield Stakes and the VRC Melbourne Stakes, and placed second four times in seven outings. As a stallion at Kia-Ora, he was leading sire in 1928-29, and one of the most influential broodmare sires in Australia. Later stallions at Kia Ora included MIDSTREAM (1933, by Blandford), a winner of six races in seventeen starts in England at ages two through four, including the the Criterion Stakes and the Newmarket Handicap, who was leading sire in Australia in 1947-48, 1950-51, and 1951-52. DELVILLE WOOD (1942, by Bois Roussel), won four races in 25 starts in England, among them Doncaster's Great Yorkshire Handicap at age four; at Kia-Ora he became the champion stallion in Australia five times, 1952-53 through 1956-57. Miller died in 1948, and the stud was finally dispersed in 1957, and the property passed through several other hands. Other stallions at the stud since Miller's day included Australian champion and popular hero GUNSYND (1967, by Sunset Hue), and his turf nemesis, the Australian-bred BAGUETTE (1967, by Rego). The graves of these more recent stallions are marked by the elegant stone steles shown above. The tenure of the present owners of Kia-Ora extends from 2000.--PE |
