JUDDMONTE FARM, on the southern edge of Lexington, Kentucky, is the American base for Khalid Abdullah's extremely successful international thoroughbred breeding and racing operation. The farm is currently the home of the outstanding broodmare Toussaud, KTOB's 2002 Broodmare of the Year.
The earliest burial at Juddmonte is for the mare MISS MANON (died 1990), a French mare who produced 5 major European stakes winners: Sharpman, Mot d'Or, Lydian, Miss Summer, and Ballinderry. BALLINDERRY, winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes (G2) in England, is also buried here. She produced French Derby (G1) and Prix d'Ispahan (G1) winner Sanglamore.
Juddmonte stallions EXBOURNE and KNOWN FACT are buried here. Homebred Exbourne won nearly a million dollars including the Hollywood Turf Handicap (G1) and was proving a good sire prior to his early death at age 10 due to laminitis. Known Fact was an early yearling purchase, winning the Middle Park Stakes (G1) at 2 and the 2,000 Guineas (G1) at 3. He became a foundation sire for Juddmonte, getting the classy runner and sire Warning (GB).
Already the dam of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Skywalker and stakes winners Pac Mania and Royal Captive, BOLD CAPTIVE was purchased by Juddmonte and produced 2 additional stakes winners, Danzante and Nidd. SUNDAY PURCHASE was already the dam of 4 stakes winners including the Champion Older Male Bates Motel, plus San Antonio Stakes (G1) winner Hatim, Super Asset, and Emmaline prior to coming to Juddmonte. RYAFAN was a homebred and the Champion Turf Female of 1997 when a 3-year-old. She produced only 3 foals for Juddmonte before her untimely death in 2001. ZAIZAFON won the Seaton Delaval Stakes (G3) at 2 in England but did much more as a broodmare for Juddmonte, producing Europe's 1992 Champion 2-Year-Old Zafonic, who became a top sire, as well as stakes winners Zamindar and Choice Spirit.
There is also a small cemetery on Juddmonte's Myrtlewood division, featuring Brownell Combs' foundation mare *FRIZEUR, the show jumper ROYAL BRIGADE, and the American Saddlebred show horse STONEWALL IMPERIAL. |
