The only horse to win both the Grand National and the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the same year, Irish-bred Golden Miller set a National course record that stood until another great horse, Red Rum, broke it almost 40 years later. He ran 4 other times in the National, but did not finish the course. Sound throughout his long career of 55 races (winning 29), intelligent, handsome and economic in jumping style, his record of five successive Gold Cup wins still stands, justly earning him the title, "Steeplechaser of the Century." Neither his sire, Goldcourt, nor his grandsire, Goldminer, set foot on a race course; nonetheless, Goldcourt also sired two Irish Grand National winners. Golden Miller's dam, Miller's Pride, produced a good chaser in May Crescent, and placed in a small chase herself. Her sire, Wavelet's Pride, was a horse of stamina and speed who won the Great Metropolitan, among other races, including a hurdle race, and was a top jumping sire. |
