French-bred Ex Voto, owned by Baron de Schickler, won the Prix Hocquart at Longchamp, then lost two important races, the Poule d'Essai, won by Vinicius, and the Prix Lupin, won by Caius. His win in the prestigious 1903 Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly, therefore, was considered a big surprise. A son of Le Sancy and a daughter of Bend Or, he proved to be an excellent jumper sire, getting three winners of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, and Dan IV, who won the American Grand National, and was also the ancestor of Nurzeus, seen in various warmblood jumper pedigrees. |
