Arthur Veil-Picard's cherry and mustard colored silks on the French obstacle courses were as famous and familiar to French racegoers between 1910 and 1950 as those of Marcel Boussac's, his famous contemporary who raced horses on the flat. The French owner won the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris six times with five different horses between 1909 and 1939. In 1938, he took French-bred Empressor on a raid into Italy, where he won the Gran Premio Merano at the recently completed new course, with its Moderne style clubhouse and stands. Empressor was trained by J. Ginzbourg, the most successful jumper trainer in France during the '20s. In sire line descent Empressor traced back to Rabelais, one of St. Simon's staying sons, who also got the 1914 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris winner Lord Loris. |
