Emigrant's enterprising jockey, Charlie Boyce, took a tow path with better ground around one of the fences in their second circuit round the 1857 Grand National course. Since then, National fences have been flagged on both ends. It's believed Emigrant was by Melbourne, if so, one of the first to show his jumping ability for which Melbourne stock became justly noted. The other stallion who may have been his sire, Drayton, also got Bourton, the 1854 Grand National winner. |
