Four-time National Hunt Horse of the Year Desert Orchid won the Cheltenham Gold Cup of 1989 and was the unprecedented four-time winner of the King George VI Chase (1986, 1988-90), in all winner of 34 races from 70 starts and of over £540,000. In 1990 he also won the Irish Grand National. Retired in 1991, and still enjoying his retirement, "Dessie" is the most recent of Great Britain's beloved sporting horse personalities, with his grey coat and strong style over fences, and is honored with a statue at Kempton, the site of his multiple wins. His sire, Grey Mirage, ran well at 2, winning 4 important stakes races.
