In the early '20s several wealthy Americans formed a consortium to purchase "made" foreign jumpers in Europe and distribute them by lot--Dan IV, a four year old with some modest success, bred in France, was one of several purchased as "samples." His first American season, 1923, he was three for three, including the Manly Memorial Handicap at Pimlico; the following year he went on to win several good races, including the American Grand National. He later stood as a U.S. Army remount stallion in Virginia. His sire, the french Ex Voto, won the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly and the Prix Hocquart at Longchamp, and got three winners of the Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, among other good jumpers. |
